Choose a piñata by age and opening resistance

Five-year-olds and twelve-year-olds need different options
A younger child may struggle with a shell that gives an older child an enjoyable challenge. An older or more experienced participant may open an easy-release piñata before everyone has a turn. Age is a starting point, so also tell the maker about ability, opening method and whether the group has mixed ages.
Our proposed opening levels
- Pull-open: opens through its intended release mechanism, without striking. A starting option for younger children and mixed abilities, with adult supervision.
- Easy opening: a controlled opening area for gentler strikes. A proposed option for younger participants when that exact design has been evaluated.
- Standard opening: more resistance at the intended opening area for older participants. It must still open through the designed mechanism.
These are proposed All Pinatas categories, not tested ratings currently assigned to products. There is no guaranteed number of hits.
Which level should I ask for?
Under 3: adult opening and distribution. Ages 3–5: start by discussing supervised pull-open; easy-opening strike designs need a suitable evaluated recipe. Ages 6–8: discuss pull-open or easy opening. Ages 9–12: discuss standard opening or pull-open. Mixed ages: choose around the youngest or least able participant, or separate the activities.
What makers need to build consistently
Use a versioned recipe for each design, size and opening level. Record material type, thickness, adhesive, drying conditions, joins, decorations and the controlled opening feature. Changing layers alone is not a standard because materials, shape and construction change the result.
The hanging attachment must be designed and evaluated separately. Do not weaken the suspension to make the piñata easier to open. Keep the candy load within the documented limit and provide clear use instructions.
How a level becomes a product rating
All Pinatas needs repeated, documented adult-operated evaluations of representative samples under a defined test method before assigning a level. Record the intended equipment, opening behavior and any unintended breakage. A qualified reviewer must establish the acceptance criteria. No age-to-force table or automatic AI approval is used.
